So really, there’s good news, and there’s bad news. First the good news. YBM is doing well and continues to attract new visitors to partake in our scintillating daily conversations about life, love and the pursuit of America’s Next Top Model.  I know some of you may be worried about the continued dilution of the gene pool, but I really think a healthy user base is key to keeping the conversation lively.

Unfortunately, popularity comes at a price. Many of you have probably noticed that things don’t chug along quite as smoothly as they once did, and it’s simply because there are now TOO MANY OF YOU. But since we like you all and want you to stay (except maybe for caps lock repeater mom, you’re kind of annoying…), our only other option is to upgrade the server.

So as of now, we’re putting new feature development on hold while we look into upgrade options. There’s a lot of technical mumbo jumbo and considerations but we’re moving as fast as we can,  so please bear with us during these growing pains. We hope the site will be back to normal soon and will continue to keep you updated as things progress.

UPDATE 8/15/08: I made some changes to the site this afternoon which I hope will alleviate some of the performance issues we’re having. Let me know if you see an improvement. Here’s hoping for another few months on this rickety server…

  1. Thanks for the update! I would be happy to pay $5 bucks or so for your trouble (and to keep it ad-free here.) Metafilter.com did this a few years ago and it worked out very well for everyone.

  2. If you need assistance, definitely let us know. Personally I’d have 3 immediate suggestions: lighttpd, EC2 & database denormalization. But those are just off the top of my head. Clearly $5/month would get you some way but I doubt it would be enough. Good luck! :)

  3. Put up a donate link and I’ll Paypal you anything you need! I bet lots of us would. I’m very grateful to you for keeping this community alive.

  4. $5 a month is too much, and woudl kill the site. $10 one time fee for signing up ought to cover it.

  5. Ill donate if it requires cash!

  6. I would pay to use YBM and I’m sure others would as well. You might want to try it on a volunteer basis first and see what you get.

  7. I also think PayPal is a good option.

  8. I’m on the paypal donation bandwagon as well.

  9. I would also paypal $5 or $10 if you told us you needed it for the site. I would even believe you. I love that this site is ad-free for now and that there is no horrible deleter. It’s worth it for the time being, and I’m all for supporting the little guy.

  10. I’ll be happy to find you an advertiser to pay for your worries and support us in our tirades!

  11. I just discovered you last night, and am SOOOO thrilled, it’s like finding your lost best friend. Someone welcomed me with ‘Hi, bitch!’ and this never sounded sweeter.
I’ll be happy to contribute $5-$10, and I’m on the lower end of the HHI here.
    and thank you soo much!

  12. Hello, if your current server is really as rickety as you mention, I may help you out with a better server, for free, complete with hosting, traffic etc.

I really have no clue how popular you are and if I really can help. Let me know some numbers, or what you require, to get a better understanding, if you are interested.

    Regards,
    Henning

  13. Thanks everyone for your generous offers to help out. The changes we made in the last weeks look like they made a noticeable difference, so we've got some room to breathe for now. All the same, it is nice to know we have such a supportive community. - YBM
