Unfortunately, I had to kill the collapse-a-subthread-with-the-click-of-a-bullet feature on the beta site. It was causing some compatibility problems as well as some performance issues. Oh well, I was never really happy with it to begin with. For one, it wasn’t terribly intuitive since there was no visual cue that the ability even existed. Secondly, it didn’t solve the problem of offensive posts, since you would just end up hiding all the replies to the post without hiding the post itself.
But all is not lost. In its place, we’ve added the ability to hide and unhide posts. The new hide button (next to the reply button) will replace the offending message with a “post hidden” link, and also hide any replies following it. And when the urge to feed the troll finally overcomes you, click on the “post hidden” link and then the unhide button to jump right back into the fray!
Really? Collapse sub-threads were unintuitive? I was lovin’ em (but then I was an early proponent of the idea, so perhaps I was biased.)
I imagine that the Hide functionality will be very popular, but personally, I”m not too crazy about it. I think one of the things that makes YBM kinda cool is that it’s in your face – I certainly don’t LIKE hearing about bikini waxes, but in a way it’s sort of educational for me to. And certainly I do love the idea that my political rants were driving certain people crazy! With the hide button, the user gets to determine her own YBM experience – it’s no longer an exercises in mutual frustration.
But anyway, thanks again!
PS. Love the grey button though!
@Preznit Bush, it was unintuitive in that there was no way to know the feature existed, unless you happen to click it by accident, or someone told you about it.
Interesting thought about the change in user experience, perhaps it would be more gratifying if I showed a tally of how many hides your posts have generated! - YBM
I think one of the best aspects of this site is the fact that you can get someones knickers in a twist and cause a reply from them. The heated discussions with bruised egos and biases galore give this site its unique flavor. I fear this new feature will make this site vanilla and boring. Well, maybe then my addiction will be kicked once and for all and I can save my job!
lol sounds like a couple of trolls are not so happy about the changes! LOVE the hide personally, thanks for all you do!
