Today marks the one year anniversary of YouBeMom! What started out as a small side project turned into a 6 day, 80+ hour marathon of programming, parental negligence, and sleepless nights. With the love and support of our spouses, a sprinkling of help from the Nickelodeon television network, and some obsessive compulsive tendencies, we launched the first private beta to a handful of users on May 15th, 2008.

We never intended for the general public to see the private beta. We had all sorts of problems on that first day, from floating forms in the middle of the screen to cross-posted replies appearing in the wrong threads like some sort of mad libs gone wild—exactly the sort of thing a private beta test is meant to uncover. Despite what we thought were clear instructions in our invitation email, word of the private beta was leaked to the public within 20 minutes of its opening. Users began to pour in, chaos ensued, and the rest is history.

As always, it’s been the user community that makes ybm what it is, and you’ve all been incredibly supportive. It’s been a lot of fun working on yb, thanks for a great year!

Looking forward, expect to see a new garage-sale/classifieds section where you can sell or donate your old toys, baby gear, and clothing to other yb parents as well as post or solicit for nanny, babysitter, and other child care services. Look for it in an upcoming beta release where you’ll be able to try it out along with a few other enhancements we’ve been working on.

    congrats…i swore off YBM today..and here i am back. looking forward to the new features. if you need to hire someone…i was just laid off and have lots of time on my hands!!! thanks!

    Congratulations! Every time I have been forced to go to UB for schools stuff, I send a silent thank you to the YouBe crew for setting up this site. I can imagine that it was a ton of work, but you’ve done an amazing job. Now if only we could get more traffic on the YouBe schools board…minus the crazies.

    I don’t know how to email you to tell you that there is a SN mom who posted from SF multiple times. She posted her very personal email address and I think it shouldn’t be left out there in such a public forum. Can you go in and hide her email? I don’ t want to email her to tell her that it is there but I can’t imagine she wants it out there like this. If you want the exact permalink and stuff, email me and I’ll send it to you.

    I found my way to your site via the traffic I was getting. Apparently, some of your classier readers through it uproariously funny to make fun of the pictures I put up of my grandmothers funeral (pictures that were intended for my readers who helped pay for said funeral and my family) and to say some of the ugliest things imaginable about a woman who died a horrible death from cancer. Please, have a modicum of respect for a human life and take down this string. It’s so awful and I would imagine not what you had in mind at all when you created this community.

    If any of her children were to see this, it would tear open a wound that still hasn’t healed. Please take it down.
